Clockwork Carousel

about

Charlotte was just one of many Charlottes.

She worked in a great clock tower in the center of their world. Were the clock ever to stop, it was said, time too would cease to pass.

Given this, none of the Charlottes knew how time had gotten started - perhaps the ceasing of time did not apply to them. But they wouldn't risk anything.

Charlotte went around pushing in a circle. Around, and around, and around, and around. Every twelve hours - hours that she helped provide - she could at last switch out with another.

In the center of the tower, there were carousels stacked upon one another, each more beautiful than the one below it. It was thought these were to serve as a reminder of the effect their work had.

The more they worked, the higher up the Charlottes could go. Charlotte wondered what could be waiting at the top. Charlotte wondered if there could be a top.

As she thought on these things, she rode an elevator spinning down toward the bottom; after that, she would go home. There was still a view of the carousels, so she watched them spin with a smile.

Time was marching on.
